There are three different grades of cellulite that dermatologists use to classify and treat cellulite. They are:
- Grade 1 – There are no clinical symptoms, but under a microscope, you can see that cells have anatomical changes.
- Grade 2 – This grade of cellulite shows the skin having decreased elasticity, in which the skin appears to have certain areas with underlying fat deposits that make it appear lumpy and dimpled as opposed to smooth.
- Grade 3 – Shows the skin having visible roughness, similar to an orange peel.
Even though cellulite can still affect men, it’s more common in women – mainly because women are more prone to have certain types of fat and connective tissue.
So what are the causes of cellulite?
There are a number of causes of cellulite and they include:
- Genetics – If your mom has cellulite, then you’re more likely to get it, too, since certain genes are needed for cellulite to occur. Such genes that may make you more likely to get cellulite are: race, gender, distribution of fat under your skin and race.
- Diet – What you eat highly impacts your chances of developing cellulite. Those who consume too much salt, fat or carbs are more likely to develop it, as well as those who don’t get enough fiber.
- Hormones – Your hormones play an important role in cellulite development, with many doctors and researchers believing that estrogen, thyroid hormones, insulin and others have a huge part in the production of cellulite.
- Lifestyle – Research has shown that cellulite is more prevalent in those who don’t exercise, smoke or sit or stand for long periods of time
- Clothing – Even the type of clothing you wear can impact your chances of getting cellulite, such as undergarments that are tight.
